Self-Defense in a “Safe” Neighborhood
I read a report this morning that Carmel, Indiana was named the safest city in the state. The report was based on the FBI’s four major violent crime categories–murders, aggravated assaults, robberies, and forcible rapes. The study included cities with populations greater than 100,000. Carmel was measured “the safest” compared to 30 other Indiana cities.
Now don’t go leaving your car unlocked next time you go to Carmel, thinking it will be safe there. When I teach my Bulletproof Self-Defense class, I like to tell my students about my own experience with crime. I lived in Miami, Florida for 7 years. I was in my early 20s. I worked an overnight shift at a television station, traveled some pretty dicey neighborhoods to get to and from work, and lived alone for the majority of my time there. And I was never the victim of crime, despite the fact that Miami frequently tops the list of most violent cities. Then I moved to Noblesville, Indiana which you’ll never see on one of those lists. And that’s where my car was stolen, right out of my driveway. You see, because I was living in a place others had labeled as “safe” I let down my guard. I accidentally left my keys in my car and it was stolen. That’s something I would have NEVER done when I was living in Miami. I was too careful to let that happen.
The point I like to make in my self-defense classes is to never let your guard down. Adopt personal safety standards and make them part of your routine. Always. No matter where you are. Because it’s not a location that’s safe or unsafe. It’s the people who are there. And criminals can travel anywhere, even to your nice, “safe” neighborhood.
